Windows Photo Gallery is a photo viewing tool developed by Microsoft Corporation. It comes with multiple functions and abilities. As it was also a member of Microsoft’s Windows Essentials, it was discontinued on January 10, 2017, which is at the same time when the whole line of Essentials was discontinued. But even though the software itself has stopped and has lost all Support from Microsoft, it is still available for download. The main capabilities of the software are – organizing images, sharing and editing photos.
Some of the highlights of the Windows Gallery include management of pictures, tagging people and searching for digital photographs. The windows photo viewer comes with an image viewer which is capable of replacing the default image viewer of the operating system, and it also comes with a picture import tool, to import photos from various external drives connected to the PC. The Gallery also allows you to directly upload photos from your PC to OneDrive, Facebook, and Flikr. According to Microsoft, the Windows Photo Gallery application is not compatible with Windows 10 and other newer versions of windows. However, some websites do claim that it still works well with windows.
Windows photo gallery provides a large number of different tools in its gallery view. The tools include rating pictures, adding captions to images, adding titles, and also includes custom metadata tags for pictures. There's also a little support for video files like tagging and managing them, but the editing is not available. The software uses a hierarchical tagging method to sort photos if you delete a tag from the software itself, then the tag gets removed from all the photos too. The 2011 version of Windows Photo Gallery also supports people tagging (with face detection and recognition) and geotagging.
The Gallery is run on the PIX Engine and uses the Windows Imaging Component library. The Windows Photo Gallery has its metadata handling and support and since the WIC codec is extensible. Therefore the formats supported by Windows Photo Gallery are JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF and HD photos of the format WDP (.wdp), which was later replaced by JPEG XR (.jxr).
Windows Photo Gallery has tools for basic editing of a photo. These tools are capable of cropping, red-eye reduction and resizing of pictures. The software is also capable of showing the color histogram of an image so that its shadows, sharpness and highlights can be edited. It also has tools for blemish removal and reducing noise. It has some features which were developed by Microsoft Research, which includes Photo fuse, Panoramic stitching and AutoCollage.
